The calorific value or the number of calories in the food that you eat determines whether your weight goes up, down or stays the same. The physical laws of the universe state that energy or calories will always be conserved which means that if you consume more calories than your body burns then the excess calories will be stored in the form of fat.

If you eat fewer calories than your body burns then you will lose weight. It really is as simple as that but there are a few things that you need to be aware of when you are trying to lose weight by reducing your calorie intake.

Don't reduce your calorie intake too far in order to lose weight quickly. This will happen of course but fasting for weight loss will lose you not only body fat but also muscle and lean tissue from your internal organs, which isn't good for you. In addition your body will react to the sudden drop in energy intake and lower your metabolism to compensate. This means that you will start to burn calories slower to make them go further. You'll also most likely develop a tremendous appetite, which will make it very difficult to keep your weight down for very long. Rapid weight loss is almost never good for long-term results.

When you're counting calories you should aim to eat a healthy diet and reduce your calorie intake by only a small amount so as not to shock your body. Change your lifestyle if necessary to add some exercise routines and reduce your weight by 1 or 2 pounds a week which is a much more healthy weight loss. This will reduce your fat while maintaining your lean body tissue and give you a much better chance of keeping your weight down in the long term.

But counting calories can be chore, especially when you might need to do it for a long time but there is a hard way and a simple way to count calories.

The hard way is to examine and weigh and list and calculate each and every piece of food and drink that you consume in the day, every day. You should have a calorie budget of around 1200 to 2000 calories that has been calculated to reduce your weight and when you hit your budget you stop eating.

This sounds a lot of work to me, especially as you might want to do it for the rest of your life. I'm a believer in doing work once and benefiting from that work for a long time so why not do all of your calorie counting once and using the results to tell you what you can eat every day.

Simplify calorie counting by making menus

The solution is to create menus. Take a sheet of paper and write down your meals for the day, what you are going to eat, how big the portions are and of course, how many calories each portion carries. Add up the calories and you have your total calorie intake for the day when you follow that menu. You can tweak your meals on the menu to make sure that you hit your calorie budget on the last meal of the day.

You can make as many daily menu sheets as you like as long as you make sure that the daily calorie total comes out to your daily budget. When you've completed your menus all you have to do is follow them. Every day you will pick the menu you fancy and use it to plan your meals. You only need to count calories again when you make a new menu.
